Speed Skating Roundup: Women Make History, Olympic Records Fall

Wust, Fontana Set Olympic Records, Make History

Irene Wust continued a dominant Olympics for the Netherlands in speed skating, setting records in the process. Wust 12 speed skating medals are the most all time, breaking a tie with Germany’s Claudia Pechstein. Wust now ties for fourth most medal across all sports, winter or summer olympics. She won with an Olympic record time of 1:53.28, 44 hundreths of a second faster than Japan’s Miho Takagi. Antoinette De Jong of the Netherlands claimed the bronze medal.

Just as Wust broke the record for most overall speed skating medal, Italy’s Arianna Fontana extended hers. She won her second consecutive 500M speed skating gold. Fontana’s ten medals are the most in Olympic short track speed skating. She won the final despite falling on the first lap, which caused a restart. Fontana managed to pass Suzanne Schulting and win by 9 hundreths of a second. The Netherlands Schulting set the Olympic record with a time of 42.37 on Saturday. Kim Boutin won the bronze for Canada.

Netherlands Nuis defends in 1500, Sets Olympic Record

The Netherlands finished in first and second in the Men’s 1500M speed skating. Kjeld Nuis defended his gold medal with an Olympic record time of 1:43.21. His teammate, Thomas Krol, set the record minutes before. His time of 1:43.55 was good enough for silver. South Korea’s Kim Min-Seok’s 1:44.24 captured the bronze.
