It’s Super Bowl Sunday, and all eyes turn to Las Vegas as the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs will face of in the Super Bowl for the second time. The Chiefs beat the 49ers in their first Super Bowl meeting four years ago. But the 49ers still have a rich Super Bowl history under names like Joe Montana and Steve Young. Let’s take a look at the San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl history.
49ers Super Bowl History: Super Bowl XVI
It took 16 years for the 49ers to reach their first Super Bowl. Joe Montana led the team to the game behind a great pass to Dwight Clark, known as “The Catch.” The 49ers faced the Cincinnati Bengals in a very rare scenario where both teams were first time participants. San Francisco capitalized on early mistakes by the Bengals. While Cincinnati was able to close the gap, the Bengals were never able to catch up completely. San Francisco won 26-21 giving the team its first Super Bowl championship.
49ers Super Bowl History: Super Bowl XIX
Three years later, the 49ers were back in the Super Bowl in a matchup between legendary quarterbacks. Montana led the more complete team while Dan Marino set, what was then, a single season passing record leading the Dolphins to their final, to date, Super Bowl appearance. San Francisco cruised to the 38-16 victory proving that a complete team always beats one amazing player.
49ers Super Bowl History: Super Bowl XXIII
Four years later, the 49ers returned for only the third rematch in Super Bowl history. San Francisco faced Cincinnati seven years after their initial championship meeting. This game was much closer as the Bengals actually led by three points when Montana and Jerry Rice put on a show for the ages. With just over three minutes remaining, the 49ers drove 92 yards on 11 plays to score the game winning touchdown. While Rice and Roger Craig caught majority of passes, John Taylor secured the game winner. Rice won Super Bowl MVP honors and it was the last game with Bill Walsh at the helm.
49ers Super Bowl History: Super Bowl XXIV
Bill Walsh may have been gone, but San Francisco was still built to win one year later. George Seifert took over and led the 49ers to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. San Francisco faced the Denver Broncos who were appearing in their third Super Bowl in four years. Simply put, this game was a slaughter. The 49ers rolled to the 55-10 victory in what remains the most lopsided Super Bowl ever. San Francisco joined the Pittsburgh Steelers as the only franchises to win four Super Bowls in a decade. That’s something no team has matched since. Montana would get injured the next year, and in an ironic bit of history, take over as starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.
49ers Super Bowl History: Super Bowl XXIX
It would take San Francisco a few years to truly find their footing under Steve Young. But with a nice manipulation of the salary cap by their GM, the 49ers returned to the big game against the Chargers in Super Bowl 29. Young set a Super Bowl record that still stands, passing for six touchdowns. The 49ers cruised to the 49-26 victory. San Francisco became the first team to win five Super Bowls and the only team to be undefeated when winning their fifth. Unfortunately, that fifth title may have come with a very high price. It would take 18 years to return to the Super Bowl, and they still haven’t won it a sixth time.
49ers Super Bowl History: Super Bowl XLVII
After going through a myriad of coaches and quarterbacks, the 49ers finally made it back behind head coach Jim Harbaugh and quarterback Colin Kaepernick. San Francisco struggled mightily against the Baltimore Ravens, who happened to be coached by Harbaugh’s brother, John. The Ravens jumped out to a huge lead, but the lights went out in New Orleans. When the power was restored, Baltimore suffered a power outage while San Francisco finally got going. The 49ers closed the gap before falling 34-31 in an artificially close game. By the time, the 49ers would return, both Harbaugh and Kaepernick would be out of the league.
49ers Super Bowl History: Super Bowl LIV
San Francisco’s last Super Bowl appearance came against the very same Chiefs team they will be playing in Super Bowl LVIII. Four years ago, Jimmy Garoppolo led the 49ers to the big game and had staked them to a late lead. However, Patrick Mahomes entered himself into the greatest quarterback of this generation conversation by leading the Chiefs to the come from behind victory. The Chiefs responded with three more Super Bowl appearances since that game, while the 49ers have stalled out one game away from the Super Bowl prior to this season.
Super Bowl LVIII Prediction
The 49ers were one of the favorites to win the NFC before the season started. San Francisco struggled at times during the season but always managed to find their groove. Led by Brock Purdy, the final pick of the 2022 draft, San Francisco has their best chance of winning a Super Bowl since the days of Montana and Young. However, the Chiefs remain the class of the AFC, if not the entire NFL. This will be a tough game for both teams, but I think Kansas City will win.
