The Carolina Panthers have hired former Colts head coach Frank Reich as their head coach for the upcoming 2023 season. Reich becomes the sixth head coach in the team’s history.

Reich does have a history with the Panthers, as he spent one year in their quarterback room in 1995. He had limited success as a player, boasting a 0-3 record with the team before losing the starting role to top-five pick, and rookie, Kerry Collins.

He comes with an offensive-minded coaching style, with an offensive scheme that boosted quarterback Nick Foles and the Philadelphia Eagles to a victory in Super Bowl LII.

Following that championship season as Offensive Coordinator for the Eagles, Reich was hired to be the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. He spent over four seasons with the team, before being fired mid-season. Frank Reich holds a 40-33-1 as a head coach.

The State Of The Carolina Panthers

Reich inherits an average Panthers squad that finished with a 7-10 record in 2022, good for second in the NFC South. Matt Rhule, the previous head coach for the Carolina Panthers, held an 11-27 record prior to his firing in October of this past season.

The Panthers are excited about his offensive-minded skillset. The team cited that as a major advantage over interim head coach Steve Wilks in the hiring process. The quarterback situation is an interesting one in Carolina, though.

Quarterback Sam Darnold had success in the latter half of the year, but there are still questions about whether he will be a franchise quarterback. This hire shows the Panthers are looking for better offensive production in 2023 and beyond. Reich will have to determine if he is content with Darnold going forward, or potentially elect to look for a new option at QB.
