The Yankees Are No Longer The Evil Empire

Yankees Disappointed Once Again in October.

The Yankees are now officially eliminated from the postseason after being swept in four games by the Houston Astros. This is the third time since 2019 the Yankees have been eliminated from the ALCS by the Astros. However, this year’s loss is harder to watch for Yankees fans.

This year looked historically promising for the Yankees, with at one point, being on pace to win 120 games this season. But this kind of success wasn’t sustainable for them, as they fell apart in the second half of the season. The Yankees were 13-13 in July, and went 10-18 in an abysmal August. They still managed to win the Division, but were not as dominant as they previously were.

Aaron Judge is now a free agent. He set the Yankees record along with the American League record for home runs with 62. He single handedly carried the Yank’s to the postseason this year after the team fell off a cliff in the second half. But after a sub-par performance this postseason, the Yankees’ fans could be heard booing him in New York during the ALCS. This isn’t what you want to hear when you’re heading into free agency and looking for the place you want to spend the next 10 years of your career.

The New York Yankees Are Not Scary Anymore.

Before game four of this ALCS, the Bronx Bombers decided to use some rather odd motivation prior to the game. The Yankees mental skills coach decided to hype up the team by showing them highlights of the 2004 ALCS, where the Red Sox became the first team to comeback from a 3-0 deficit in a series. This wouldn’t be an issue if the team that choked a 3 game lead in 2004 wasn’t the New York Yankees.

On top of this, the team also decided to FaceTime Red Sox hall-of-famer David Ortiz in Aaron Boone’s office before the game. Word of this odd motivation got around fast. Even some members from the 2004 Yankees roster heard about this news. According to YES Network’s Michael Kay, the 2004 players were ‘outraged’ that they were using their own embarrassment as motivation.

There was once a time when the Yankees were the big, bad bullies in the MLB. When they would buy any player they wanted and would pummel every team on their way to yet another championship. But that’s not the case anymore. The Bronx Bombers still hand out lucrative contracts to big name players like Giancarlo Stanton and Gerrit Cole, but have nothing to show for it. Yankees fans have been shouting ‘27 Rings’ for over a decade now, but 20 of the Yankees’ rings came before the first man walked on the moon.

Directionless in New York.

The Yankees have not won the World Series since 2009, one of their longest franchise droughts within their 27 championships. Many fans are calling for Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman to be fired, while other fans want Hal Steinbrenner to sell the team. This team doesn’t know which direction to go. And with a big offseason coming for Aaron Judge, moves need to be made urgently.

However, the Yankees have already announced that Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman will be back for 2023. The fanbase is learning what it’s like to be like every other team, what it’s like not winning a World Series every decade. It’s tough to watch in New York, but there is hope that the team will get another dynasty going with many top prospects coming up through their farm system. But for now, another offseason is here early for the Yankees. And like every winter, will see if the Yankees make the changes needed to become The Evil Empire once again.
