The final AL Wild Card spot will come down to the last day of the season. Realistically, three teams are in contention for that final spot with a week left to play. As of Sunday morning, the Twins have a 0.5-game lead over Detroit and a 1.5-game lead over the Seattle Mariners.

The latter is getting hot at the right time but both the Twins and Tigers have the tie-breaker over the Mariners if the season ends in a tie. On Sunday, Seattle concludes it’s three-game series against the Texas Rangers, who have already been eliminated from the playoffs, at Globe Life Field. Minnesota has a doubleheader against Boston after Saturday evening’s contest was postponed. Finally, the Tigers are playing in Baltimore. So how could we have a tie?

If the Twins and Tigers lose their respective games and the Mariners win. It’ll be a three-way tie. One week to go, and many interesting things could happen in the final week. The Royals are another team to watch in this wildcard race. The Mariners are only two games behind that second spot.

Seattle could still claim their division title, but even with a sweep over Houston in the final week, the Mariners would need some help.

Playoff Odds

The Orioles and Mariners still have a 1% chance to win their respective divisions. As far as the overall playoff odds, this is how it plays out according to Fangraphs:

Orioles – 99.8%
Twins – 76.5%
Royals – 75.5%
Tigers – 38.9%
Mariners – 9.4%
