The Minnesota Timberwolves suspended center Rudy Gobert for their Tuesday play-in game and will not travel with the team against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Gobert is expected to return from the one-game suspension if the Timberwolves have to play another play-in game or if they advance into the Western Conference playoffs. This comes after Sunday’s altercation where Gobert punched teammate Kyle Anderson.

After the game, Rudy Gobert issued the following statement.

“Emotions got the best of me today. I should not have reacted the way I did regardless of what was said,” Gobert said. “I wanna apologize to the fans, the organization and particularly to Kyle, who is someone that I truly love and respect as a teammate.”

Surprisingly, the Timberwolves have performed better without Gobert on the court. In games with Gobert, the Timberwolves have won 48.6% of games compared to winning 66.7% of games without Gobert.

The trade to acquire Gobert had looked worse by the day, as Minnesota gave away multiple first-round picks and key bench players. In his first year on the team, Gobert’s numbers are his lowest since the 2017-18 season, and the Timberwolves are again in the play-in tournament. This was supposed to be a trade that propelled Minnesota into a Finals contender but instead has exploded in their faces as they’re stuck with a $205 million center and will need to pay Anthony Edwards the max soon or move on from Gobert.
