At this point of the off-season post the draft top 25 NFL free agents are still available for a particular season. One is because production is relative to age as well as disputes over market value for certain positions. In some cases, veteran players want to skip out on off-season training and training camps. Many would rather come in closer to the end of training camp and physically prepare themselves.
Quarterback
Ryan Tannehill, Titans. Of the Top 25 NFL free agents Tannehill is first on the list because he plays the most important position. At the beginning of the off-season, Arthur Smith signed on as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Many people believed he would most likely bring Tannehill with him to the Steelers. Before the current makeup of the Steelers quarterback room, it was in shambles. Coming off another season in which Kenny Pickett struggled, the stars aligned for a potential teaming up with Tannehill. However, that did not happen and Tannehill is still looking for a new home. As the best quarterback option available it may take an injury for him to get a call.
Running Back
Dalvin Cook, Ravens. Cook’s time in Minnesota came to an end and he signed with the New York Jets. With limited playing time, Cook was not happy with his role on the team. Following his Jets release he signed with the Ravens but once again did not get much playing time. At this point of the off-season, there might be questions if his time in the league is coming to an end.
Wide Receiver
Hunter Renfrow, Raiders. Renfrow is a slot receiver who offers teams a chance of a player to attack teams in a zone defense. He shines in moments when getting significant targets playing on the inside. With his potential, he should find a home soon and be ready for the start of training camp if he wants to attend.
Micheal Thomas, Saints. Thomas was at one point one of the most prolific wideouts in the NFL. Was at once the Saints go-to player, however now 31 and coming off multiple injuries, availability is his biggest question mark. Thomas may still contribute in a limited role. He was always a high volume pass catcher. His fit could be on a young team as a possession receiver on third downs.
Tight Ends
Logan Thomas, Commanders. Made the most of his time with the Commanders and he turns 33 on July 1st. Thomas still could have a little in the tank and be a contributor for a team this upcoming season.
Robert Tonyan, Bears. Tonyan who just turned 30 might be hard-pressed to find a home in which he will get starting reps. At this point in his career, he may be able to serve as a veteran presence for a young team with a young up-and-coming tight end. Could be a solid fit behind Brock Bowers with the Raiders.
Offensive Tackles
David Bakhtiari, Packers. It was a bit of a shock the Jets did not take a flier on him to block for Aaron Rodgers. The Jets brought in multiple offensive linemen this off-season to sure up the line. Suffered many injuries during his career, and his time could be close to ending as an NFL player.
Donovan Smith, Chiefs. Was formerly with the Buccaneers left tackle, played with the Chiefs last season, and was ok protecting Patrick Mahomes. His best fit now might be a swing tackle as a backup.
Charles Leno Jr. Commanders. He was a solid player last season and should be able to notch more time with a team. He turns 33 soon and may be a backup for a team looking to solidify its offensive line.
D.J. Humphries, Cardinals. Had a very rough season with the Cardinals last season. He turned 30 in December and finding a team to prove himself in camp could be the best route for him to go.
Guard/Centers
Connor Williams, Dolphins. Young center that is only 27. He is coming off a serious knee injury he suffered last December. When healthy he will get a look at getting on the field for a team. Whether it be as a starter or swing lineman.
Dalton Risner, Vikings. The former second-rounder had a not-so-good season. While in Minnesota he stood out as being the weak link on the offensive line.
Defensive Tackle
Calais Campbell, Falcons. Future Hall Of Famer who will turn 38 soon still has solid to good play left to give. He could be the veteran that helps a contending team get over the hump. He will bring legitimate experience as a veteran Campbell should land with a contending team. He might be a late training camp signee.
Cornerbacks
Steven Nelson, Texans. Has played for four teams in his career, and was a solid fit with the Texans. Moving forward he could be a contingency for a young team and young corner trying to develop. Maybe a fringe starter right now and there should be some suitors as we get closer to OTA’s and training camp.
Stephon Gilmore, Cowboys. Similar to Nelson, however, Gilmore isn’t far removed from being an elite corner in this league. He is still playing well and can potentially start for a team and provide good coverage skills. Gilmore should find his sixth team relatively soon. The former pro bowler may still be one of the best TOP 25 NFL Free Agents even if he is not on a team yet.
Xavien Howard, Dolphins. It is a bit shocking that the four-time pro-bowler has not been signed by a team yet. He is only 30 years old and his best option may be with the Vikings and Brain Flores.
Adoree Jackson, Giants. The former first-rounder is 28 and should provide speed to a depth chart. Jackson however struggled on a Giants team that was overall abysmal last season. Should find a home soon, still young enough to become a rotational corner.
Patrick Peterson, Steelers. At 34 still speedy but the dropoff in coverage from his time in Minnesota is evident. It might be hard for him to find another home. It will be difficult for another team to bring a 34 year old corner in. Would provide a veteran presence for a young cornerback room.
Safeties
Justin Simmons, Broncos. He was named second-team All-Pro for a fourth time in 2023. Simmons won’t turn 31 until November. For the safety position, the market is usually limited for this position. He might be able to find a starting job late heading into training camp. Simmons just might be one of the most skilled Top 25 NFL free agents on this list.
Jamal Adams, Seahawks. At this time in his career, Adams can be a valuable situational safety. He would benefit as a hybrid safety and linebacker. The question is will that be enough to get the 28-year-old another starting job.
Quandre Diggs, Seahawks. Has struggled as of late and will be difficult to find a starting spot and maybe even as a starter.
Marcus Maye, Saints. Maye could provide good situational playmaking for a team.
Eddie Jackson, Bears. Jackson is 30 years old and many believe that he will end up with the Los Angeles Rams at some point before the season starts.
Jayron Kearse, Cowboys. The 30-year-old could end up giving support to his former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Could be the veteran needed to come into Washington and teach a young team the new defense.
