Week 7 of the college football season did not disappoint as we were treated to some true classics highlighted by Tennessee’s massive victory over Alabama. This week’s slate features another top-10 matchup and a pair of undefeated teams going head to head. Here are your top 5 college football matchups of week 8.
Honorable Mentions:
- No. 24 Mississippi State (5-2) at No. 6 Alabama (6-1): Last week, Alabama suffered a crucial defeat at the hands of rival Tennessee. Now, the fate of their season is on the line and they must be perfect from here on out. This game could arguably be in the top 5, but I feel like we will see an angry Bama team go out there and spank the Bulldogs at home.
- Texas A&M (3-3) at South Carolina (4-2): Another intriguing SEC matchup here. With Jimbo Fisher wasting the season with this loaded roster, a fourth loss could send the program spiraling out of control and cast serious doubts about Fisher’s future at A&M.
5. No. 14 Syracuse (6-0) at No. 5 Clemson (7-0)
When: Saturday, 12:00 pm ET
Where: Memorial Stadium, SC
Spread: Clemson (-13.5)
This battle of the unbeatens will be an interesting noon game to watch. It’s still surprising to call Syracuse unbeaten going into week 8, but that’s reality. Clemson will be heavy home favorites for this important divisional bout but don’t count the Orange out so soon. They have the 8th-ranked defense nationally and we know Clemson’s offense can be shaky at times. If they fail to get off to a hot start, they could find themselves in a much closer game than expected.
4. No. 17 Kansas State (5-1) at No. 8 TCU (6-0)
When: Saturday, 8:00 pm ET
Where: Amon G. Carter Stadium, TX
Spread: TCU (-3.5)
Your weekly TCU shootout will be against a solid Wildcats team that’s sitting right below them in the Big 12 standings. A win for the Wildcats will give them the top spot in the conference but nobody has been able to slow down TCU’s 3rd ranked offense. A victory for the Horned Frogs would be their best start to a season since 2017.
3. No. 7 Ole Miss (7-0) at LSU (5-2)
When: Saturday, 3:30 pm ET
Where: Tiger Stadium, LA
Spread: LSU (-2)
Personally, this matchup excites me the most this week. In my opinion, LSU should be ranked and they are in great shape to pull off an upset over the undefeated Rebels. In week 6, Tennessee’s potent offense was able to beat LSU easily in Tiger Stadium, but they bounced back in week 7 with a huge win over Florida in The Swamp. The home-field advantage of Tiger Stadium makes LSU 2-point favorites, but Ole Miss’ 3rd-ranked rushing attack could cause them some major issues. The Rebels suddenly find themselves atop the SEC West after Bama’s defeat last week and will be looking for their first 8-0 start since 1962, a year when they won the National Championship.
2. No. 20 Texas (5-2) at No. 11 Oklahoma State (5-1)
When: Saturday, 3:30 pm ET
Where: Boone Pickens Stadium, OK
Spread: Texas (-6)
Oklahoma State fell short in last week’s overtime thriller against TCU and will now have to host the Longhorns who are finding their groove. Texas has won its last three games by an average of 23.3 points against pretty good competition. The Cowboys will be looking to win its 7th game over Texas in the past 8 seasons. The winner of this game will be (or tied for) 2nd in the Big 12 conference.
1. No. 9 UCLA (6-0) at No. 10 Oregon (5-1)
When: Saturday, 3:30 pm ET
Where: Autzen Stadium, OR
Spread: Oregon (-6)
Your best game of the weekend features the only top-10 matchup of the slate. The Pac-12 has been much more exciting this season than in years past, and we have USC and UCLA’s resurgences to thank for it. The Bruins are looking for their first 7-0 start since 2008, but standing in their way is conference powerhouse, Oregon. The Ducks have dominated this series, winning 9 of the last 10 matchups. A win for Oregon would vault them to first in the conference, while UCLA looks to retain its foothold atop the Pac-12.
