With the Super Bowl in the rearview mirror, it’s time to focus on the offseason. There are a lot of talented wide receivers who could be on the move this offseason.
Let’s take a look at some of the best available receivers and where they may end up at the start of next season.
Davante Adams
A serious contender for the best receiver in the league. Adams route running and ability to create separation makes him nearly un-guardable. Adams went for 1500+ yards and 11 touchdowns last season.
If there were no rumors of Aaron Rodgers leaving, I would expect nothing other than Adams to resign in Green Bay. I would expect Adams to wait for Rodgers to make his decision first. If Rodgers stays in Green Bay, expect Adams to do the same.
If Rodgers ends up leaving, there are a few options for Adams that make sense.
Las Vegas Raiders
Davante Adams and Derek Carr we’re teammates in college at Fresno State, and have expressed interest in playing together again.
Las Vegas has lacked offensive fire power, and it’s not for a lack of trying. They had Amari Cooper, they drafted Henry Ruggs, they just have not been able to keep their offense consistent for Carr. Adams would be a perfect for for the Raiders.
Miami Doplhins
The Dolphins are expected to have the most cap space of any teams in the NFL this season. The Dolphins still are looking to make a decision on their quarterback of the future. Will it be Tua? Deshaun Watson? Jacoby Brissett?
Regardless of who the Dolphins choose, Davante Adams would be a great addition. The Dolphins were close to being a playoff team. Rookie receiver Jaylen Waddle showed a lot of promise, and the duo of him and Adams could be dangerous.
Allen Robinson
Robinson had a less than stellar season last year in Chicago. He has had a very up and down career, but the one thing he has always lacked was a solid quarterback. It would make the most sense for him to go somewhere with a quarterback he likes.
New England Patriots
Following Mac Jones rookie season, the Patriots got a view of their timetable, it’s now. They need to focus on getting Jones a solid #1 receiver. Robinson would be a great fit in New England. They have some solid receivers, but they could use a go-to proven receiver. Robinson will also be looking to bounce back from a slow season and won’t be seeking too much money.
Detroit Lions
Yes, the Lions. The same team that went 3-13-1 last season. Rookie receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown showed that he is a star in the making. The Lions want to add some more offensive talent for Jared Goff. Robinson would be a good hometown reunion, the Detroit native is in need of an offense that trusts him after the Bears misused him.
Juju Smith-Schuster
Juju has had a shaky time in Pittsburgh, and with Big Ben retiring and the Steelers going into a rebuild, I see Juju going elsewhere in free agency. He is not a number 1 option, but he could make an established receiver room even better.
Dallas Cowboys
I know what you’re thinking, the Cowboys already have Ceedee Lamb and Amari Cooper. They will likely be losing Michael Gallup to free agency, and Juju would be able to come into a situation where he would be the third target. He would see easier coverages and be less of a focal point for the defense.
Kansas City Chiefs
Juju is not the #1 receiver a lot of people thought he was after his first couple seasons. That is why he should be looking to join an already established wide receiver group. It allows him to be involved in the offense without being the defenses main focus.
Mike Williams
One of the most interesting free agents this year. He has not been the most consistent player since he was drafted. But he does have two 1000+ yard seasons, and two seasons with at least 9 touchdowns.
LA Chargers
It makes the most sense for Williams to stay in LA. They have their quarterback in Herbert, and a solid offense with Keenan Allen and Austin Ekeler. Williams won’t be the #1 receiver, but he has familiarity in the offense. He has chemistry with Keenan Allen. The Chargers should be pushing to bring Williams back.
New England Patriots
The Patriots need to build their offense with a number 1 receiver. Right now, Williams is not that. He does bring an aspect that the Patriots lack, big play ability. They don’t have the deep threat receiver, Jakobi Meyers and Kendrick Bourne are great, but they are more slot type receivers. Williams has a big 6’4″ build and can go up and get jump balls.
The Injured
I wanted to separate these two from the rest of the list. Wide receivers coming off of injuries are a huge question mart going into free agency. There are two big ones.
Odell Beckham Jr
The now Super Bowl Champion tore his ACL during the big game. After a second half of the season turnaround, Beckham had played himself back into a potentially big contract. He seemed to like the fit in LA with the Rams, so it would make sense for him to sign a smaller one year deal and potentially come back late next season.
Chris Godwin
Godwin also suffered an ACL tear back in December. He has a big decision to make, now that Tampa is looking for their QB of the future. I see the Patriots and Jaguars both making a run after Godwin. Both teams have young quarterbacks and want talented receivers to make their lives easier.
