Week 0 and Week 1 of the college football season opened up with some exciting games involving several Power 5 teams. Let’s take a look at the top five remaining college football matchups that you won’t want to miss this weekend.
5. West Virginia at No. 7 Penn State
When: Saturday, 7:30 pm ET
Where: Beaver Stadium, PA
Where to watch: NBC
Spread: Penn State (-20.5)
Penn State opens its season hosting unranked West Virginia. This is a renewed rivalry between the two teams that hasn’t been played since 1992. The two schools faced off yearly from 1947 to 1992 until West Virginia and Penn State moved into separate conferences. Penn State is a team with legit playoff aspirations and the clock is ticking for coach James Franklin to finally overcome Michigan and Ohio State in the Big Ten. For West Virginia, head coach Neal Brown enters the season on the heat seat with a 22-25 record over the past four seasons.
4. Boise State at No. 10 Washington
When: Saturday, 3:30 pm ET
Where: Husky Stadium, WA
Where to watch: ABC
Spread: Washington (-14)
By far the most exciting matchup featuring a non-Power Five opponent, Boise State has a legit chance to knock off a top 10 team on the road. The Broncos are one of the more well-known teams outside the Power Five who have had tons of success over the past two decades. They’re coming off a 10-4 season and will be looking to play spoiler against a Washington team with equally high expectations this season. The Huskies are led by senior quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who is one of the names to watch in the Heisman race this season.
3. No. 17 TCU at Colorado
When: Saturday, 12:00 pm ET
Where: Amon G Carter Stadium, TX
Where to watch: FOX
Spread: TCU (20.5)
I’m not sure about everyone else, but I’ll definitely be watching this game to see how Colorado performs in their first contest under coach Deion Sanders. It won’t be easy as they’ll be hosting an exciting TCU squad that reached the playoff for the first time in program history. However, it’s a much different Horned Frogs team without Kendre Miller and Max Duggan running the offense. They’ll be led by redshirt sophomore quarterback Chandler Morris, who actually had his first career start against Colorado in week one last season. Morris contributed to a 38-13 win, completing 13 of 20 passes for 111 yards and rushing for another 18 before leaving in the third quarter with an injury.
2. No. 21 North Carolina at South Carolina
When: Saturday, 7:30 pm ET
Where: Bank of America Stadium, NC
Where to watch: ABC
Spread: North Carolina (-2)
Another rivalry renewed, these two teams haven’t faced off since 2021. The Tarheels lead the all-time series 35-20-4, but South Carolina has controlled this rivalry as of late, winning four of the last five matchups. Both teams come into the season pretty evenly matched and should make for a thrilling game between two NFL-caliber quarterbacks. Drake Maye and Spencer Rattler are additional names to watch in this year’s Heisman race.
1. No. 5 LSU at No. 8 Florida State
When: Sunday, 7:30 pm ET
Where: Camping World Stadium, FL
Where to watch: ABC
Spread: LSU (-2)
The long-anticipated rematch from last year has finally arrived. Last season in New Orleans, LA, FSU edged out LSU in a sloppy, nail-biter of a game that ended in a blocked field goal for the win. Now, LSU will travel to Orlando, FL, as a top-five team in college football. Both squads are looking to build upon impressive seasons last year. FSU won ten games for the first time since 2016 while the Tigers won the SEC West and defeated Alabama under first-year head coach Brian Kelly. Each team is returning their talented quarterbacks and both have the playoff in their sites. This game has all the makings for a week one classic.
