The Toronto Raptors will be without center Jakob Poeltl for the foreseeable future, as the Raptors announced Tuesday that he is out indefinitely with a left ankle sprain. Poeltl will be re-evaluated in two weeks.
The ankle sprain occurred during the third quarter of Toronto’s 133-118 win over the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.
Poeltl is averaging 10.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game for the Raptors this season. His 68.5 field goal percentage is the best in the NBA. Poeltl sits 17th in the league with 1.4 blocks per game, tied with teammate Scottie Barnes for the most on the Raptors.
The 28-year-old appeared in Toronto’s first 36 games of the year, averaging 26.5 minutes per game. He missed his first game of the season Tuesday as the Raptors fell to the Los Angeles Lakers 132-131.
Jakob Poeltl was giving the Raptors solid production before sustaining the ankle sprain. In his last four games, Poeltl was averaging 12.3 points and 2.8 blocks per game. He had two double-doubles in the first week of January, which put his total for the season at 13.
The Toronto Raptors drafted Poeltl with the ninth overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. He played two seasons with the Raptors before being traded to the San Antonio Spurs. The Raptors included him in the blockbuster 2018 trade that got Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green to Toronto.
Poeltl played parts of five seasons with the Spurs from 2018-23, averaging 8.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. San Antonio then traded him back to the Raptors on Feb. 9, 2023.
Poeltl has played 524 games in his NBA career, averaging 8.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game.
