An embarrassing loss in the FA Cup against Sheffield United. High chance this season will mark another trophyless season for Tottenham Hotspurs. It’s not anything new to the fans. Excluding friendlies, the last time Tottenham finished the season with silverware was 15 years ago, in 2007/2008, when they defeated Manchester United for the English League Cup – or the Carabao Cup nowadays. It may be time for this team to make over from top to bottom.

Current situation

Tottenham is standing fourth in the Premier League this season with 45 points. Four points separate Manchester United above and Newcastle United below. But they have played more than their two oppositions, one and two games, respectively. In other words, there is little for them to hope for the Premier League title, and a prospective place in the top four suits them the most. They are 1-0 down against AC Milan in the Champions League. If they are to get past the Round of 16, it will take a miracle for them to advance further.

What does Tottenham have?

Let’s look at what Tottenham has as assets. Their stadium is one of the grandest in Europe right now. Good start. What about human resources? Their coach, Antonio Conte, is one of the best defensive-minded coaches of the millennium.

In terms of players, they happen to have one of, if not the best strikers in Premier League history, Harry Kane, and Asia’s finest ever, Son Heung-min, to lead the attack. Not to mention the likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison. They have two talented players in the midfield in their prime Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Rodrigo Bentacur. And leading the backline is the World Cup champion, Christian Romero.

Looks good on paper. But fails in reality. It may be time to blow it all up.

The rebuild

This situation is when Conte decides to stay with Tottenham Hotspurs after this season. And also, the case if their chairman Daniel Levy isn’t so conservative.

Defense

Right now, the most trustworthy back threes consist of Christian Romero, Eric Dier, and Ben Davies. Clement Lenglet should be returned to Barcelona at the end of his loan as he didn’t contribute much. Davinson Sanchez is only 26 and is about to enter his prime. But the problem with the Colombian is his consistency. Tottenham should look to sell Sanchez while his value is still high. This means they have to look for a new center-back. And who is better than Piero Hincapie, an Ecuador international currently playing for Bayer Leverkusen. He is young and talented and could fill the gaps of either Dier or Davies, as he is only 21.

Captain Hugo Lloris will also be on the chopping board when his contract expires in 2024. We love Lloris, but Tottenham needs a rejuvenation and salary space.

Midfield

Because Tottenham plays a 3-4-3 consistently, we will include the wingbacks here. On the right side, Emerson Royal is in decent form. But true Tottenham fans know he is a liability with his crosses and can sometimes be very inconsistent on defense. He is only 24; they could get some return out of him. If Pedro Porro can show what he did at Sporting, he is a more reliable option. Djed Spence will also return from loan, a player Tottenham should keep for next year. A move for Inter’s Denzel Dumfries should also be considered.

The left flank is where the headache kicks in. Spurs’ most steadfast player there is 34-year-old Ivan Perisic. He is good for now but won’t be here after next season. And Ryan Sessegnon stays in the hospital more than on the pitch. But the Englishman is still young, and his value is high enough for a quick sale at the end of the season. Sergio Reguilon will return from Atletico Madrid after the season, and he could be a viable option next season. But all eyes will be on Destiny Udogie returning; the 19-year-old can be the spark the team needs. If not, a transfer for Yannick Carrasco might be excellent for them.

The minor concern lies in the middle of the park (but that doesn’t mean there is none). Rodrigo Bentacur and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg solidify themselves as the midfielders for the future. But the former recently suffered a devastating injury that the fans hope won’t riddle in the future. Yves Bissouma – Tottenham’s big summer signing – hasn’t shown much this season. But let’s hope he will thrive in a bigger role for the remainder of the season. 20-year-old Pape Mate Sarr can be a loan departure after the season. Lastly, they must sell Lo Celso, Winks, and Ndombele when they return after the loan.

Attack

How to handle the Harry Kane situation, especially with a drastic decline in Son’s, Kulusevski’s, and Richarlison’s form. Kane has been phenomenal this season. But we cannot say the same about Tottenham’s other three biggest hopes. Son was the shadow of himself, Kulusevski dealt with injuries, and Richarlison was to play out of position to the wing (if he wasn’t injured). Either Kane or Richarlison has to go. And this might be a bold take, but selling Harry Kane might be the better option for Tottenham. The English captain is nearly 30 but is still looked for by many big teams like Bayern Munich. The price of around 70 million plus is a good return for buying new players. Is it time to look into the future?

Tottenham also brought in Danjuma from the winter transfer window, but he has yet to show much in the squad. They might consider Sporting’s Marcus Edwards, a former academy product, a suitable replacement. Club Brugge’s Andreas Skov Olsen is also a reasonable choice. Also, Lucas Moura will leave after a dreadful season so far.

Conclusion

These are just tiny bits of what Tottenham can do to turn things around after over a decade without a trophy. Of course, there is more than just buying and selling to win. Let’s see what Daniel Levy and the management board can change. Or they won’t hear the end of the “trophyless” memes.
