20-year-old Ty Gibbs has clinched his first NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship in a car owned by his grandfather. He received congratulations from the owner of the second-place finisher and a smattering of both cheers and boos due to his controversial actions leading up to the series finale. In the end, he’s proven he is very talented and really needs to mature as a person.
FIERCE FINALE RACING
The final few laps of Saturday’s finale featured a battle between three of the Championship four as Gibbs traded the lead several times with Noah Gragson and Justin Allgaier. Gibbs would take the checkered flag first for his seventh win of the season proving he had what it took all year long. Gragson and Allgaier would follow Gibbs to the finish line. It capped a strong day for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver as he won all three stages en route to the victory.
TY GIBBS: LIGHTNING ROD
Gibbs, of course, has been the source of a lot of controversy this past week. Gibbs wrecked his own teammate, Brandon Jones, for the win at Martinsville to clinch a spot in the Championship Four. The move also denied Jones a spot in the Championship Four. Afterward there was a lot of talk about if, and how, he should’ve been punished following the recent suspension of Bubba Wallace in the Cup series for intentionally wrecking Kyle Larson. It led to Gibbs offering an apology, but many, including Gragson, speaking out against the 20-year-old. What will come of this? I don’t know. I expect Ty Gibbs to run more Xfinity seasons to help mature. He’s got skill, but he’s also only 20 and he showed it on the track at Martinsville.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Ty Gibbs has got to be the favorite to repeat as Xfinity Series Champion next year. He’s young, skilled and in good equipment. Noah Gragson is moving up to Cup in 2023 to drive the Number 42 car for Richard Petty Motorsports and its new partnership with Jimmie Johnson. Justin Allgaier is an Xfinity Series regular who is always tough to beat. Josh Berry, the final member of the Championship Four, will be back in Xfinity in 2023 as well. The future looks bright for the Saturday series.
