USA Basketball Dominates the Aussie Opals

USA basketball on the women’s side took down medal favorite Australia in dominant fashion. the US will move on to play Serbia in the semis. The Aussie’s lead by WNBA head coach Sandy Brondello were just never able to really get going.

First Quarter

The first quarter started back and forth. The US tried to separate early, but Australia is a very talented team. The US took a 16-6 lead as a timeout was called by Australia. The lead swelled to 21-6. The score stayed like that until Leilani Mitchel made a wake up call three for Australia. That got the scoring going again for both sides before the quarter ended. The US had the lead 26-12.

Second Quarter

Australia started strong and had momentum. Sue Bird tried to kill it with a shot from distance. The US was able to quell a run before it started. Australia seemed flat but they continued to battle. The US had the 48-27 lead at halftime. The US finished on a 17-0 that held Australia scoreless for five minutes.

Second Half

The US picked up where they left off and got early separation. Australia was not playing like the insanely talented and stacked roster that they were. The size of the US featuring Brittney Griner helped dominate the Opals. The US had the lead after three 68-39. They were untouchable the rest of the way and cruised to a 59-73 victory for their 53rd Olympic win in a row.
