In a game with plenty of reaction with no results, the USA and England drew 0-0 in their World Cup Group B match. It’s a result either side should be happy with considering standing in their group. However, many English fans are probably a little befuddled at the performance of The Three Lions. Meanwhile, USA fans are perhaps breathing a sigh of relief.

The betting odds belonged to England heading into the matchup. After all, they are one of the more favorite teams to win the entire Cup. With veteran stars like Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, and Harry Maguire they figure to have as much talent as nearly anyone. The USA on the other hand, are led by a much younger group headed by Captain Tyler Adams and Christian Pulisic. They’ve come in Qatar with low expectations more or less just hoping to make some noise.

The match was ultra-conservative, especially from the England side. Manager Gareth Southgate has a conservative approach, but this performance went well beyond that. They had possession for 56% of the match. However, they only took 8 shots with three being on target. USA played much more dominant and in control of the match throughout the bout despite only having one shot on target. They managed to get more goals off at the net with ten total. USA led with seven corners to Englands’ three. The Yanks also had five counterattacks whereas England had one.

The problem for team USA was the lack of a true striker. Antonee Robinson and Christian Pulisic both have the speed and skill to make runs deep into opposing defenses. There just isn’t anyone there to finish them. They’ll look to advance with a win over Iran November 29th. Iran has scored twice in each match they’ve had including in their latest win over Wales. They’re far from an easy match for team USA, who must bring their A-game.

England will move onto their match with Wales with their ticket basically stamped to get into the next round. Wales needs to heavily upset them to even have a chance at being eliminated from the group stage. Their performance today was uninspiring, but the future looks bright for England.
