Bradley Beal and Kevin Love will no longer be a part of the USA Olympic Team. Love is dealing with a nagging injury that has been giving him trouble during practices and games. Beal has been placed in the health and safety protocol and has been ruled out. We are still waiting on an update regarding Jerami Grant who is also in the protocol, but has not tested positive.
Instead, it will be Keldon Johnson and JaVale McGee. Johnson is being promoted from the select team and plays for San Antonio, so he’s familiar with Popovich. He had been getting time on the Olympic roster since Booker, Holiday, and Middleton to arrive. Now he is on the roster for real. McGee certainly came out of left field but adds experience, and he is a true center.
Who Said No?
Ja Morant and Trae Young were asked to join the squad, however they turned down the offer. Tobias Harris was also reached out to. He is currently out of the country celebrating his birthday and did not respond to the invite. Julius Randle was a name to watch at first, and he may still be in play if Grant can’t go. Duncan Robinson was also a name thrown out there. He is a free agent and is viewed as someone who will not attend because of that reason. It was reported by ESPN’s Windhorst that they were looking to add another forward. We will provide an update if Grant is also unable to play.
Time is running short to get the new additions adjusted to the USA Olympic Team, especially with the exhibition schedule now in flux due to COVID concerns. Team USA is leaving for Tokyo soon and at this point, take off can’t come soon enough.
