USA volleyball has officially suffered a loss, and it might not be the only one. The USA volleyball women’s indoor team fell to the Russian Olympic Committee in three straight sets. This is the first loss of the Olympics for the team. However, the record alone is not a reason to start panicking yet. The US is still at near the top of their respected pool, and moving on to the medal rounds is still very much a possibility. But, a key player has been injured.

What Happened?

Jordan Thompson has played very well so far. She has been a big help on the offensive end. In the second set, she landed hard on her ankle. If you have any experience playing volleyball, you know the ability to push up and off with your feet is very important. As a middle blocker, you use your feel to elevate and contest the pass. A hitter does the same thing. Liberos probably need their feet the most with all of the running around they have to do. Even setters need to plant their feet just right to make a proper set. If Thompson’s injury is serious, that is a huge blow.

To make a long story short, the US did not play well. The ROC was able to win three sets in a row by scores of 25-20, 25-12, and 25-19. When she got hurt in the second set, nobody on team USA was able to pick up the slack. It wouldn’t be surprising if the team was shell shocked by the injury. If and when an update about Jordan Thompson becomes available regarding her injury and status for the next match, we will try to bring it to you in a timely manner.
