Monday afternoon, USC fired head football coach Clay Helton amid a never-ending barrage of criticism that has followed the embattled coach at the university. USC athletic director Mike Bohn had this to say in a Twitter message he posted:
This announcement comes two days after the Trojans were felled by Stanford in a 42-28 loss at the Coliseum. It also follows countless seasons under-performance, as deemed by the USC fans and boosters. It was an unpopular decision when Helton was not fired last year. USC lost to Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game last season.
Helton released this statement concerning this dismissal:
“As I committed to upon my arrival at USC, during the past two off-seasons we provided every resource necessary for our football program to compete for championship. The added resources carried significantly increased expectations for our team’s performance, and it is already evident that, despite the enhancements, those expectations would not be met without a change in leadership.”

USC Replacement Head Coach
Donte Williams, who has been the assistant coach to Helton, will be serving as the interim head coach. He will be the first black head football coach in school history.
Bohn also had this to say concerning Helton’s replacement:
“I want to be exceptionally clear: our university and its leadership are committed to winning national championships and restoring USC football to glory. This decision represents our next step toward that goal in what has been a thoughtful and strategic process to build a comprehensive football organization equivalent to the premier programs in the modern landscape.”

A search for the permanent replacement is expected to take several months.
