Adam Wainwright. That name has been synonymous with great pitching in St. Louis for sixteen years. He has been a mainstay, the leader of the pitching corps, and the undisputed co-leader of the team, shared with his long-time buddy Yadier Molina. The pair recently became the battery with the fourth highest number of career starts together when they surpassed 300 starts.

Wainwright has now surpassed another career milestone. On Thursday night in Milwaukee, Adam Wainwright struck out his 2,000 batter. This feat requires both longevity and skill. Only one other St. Louis Cardinals player has accomplished this, and that was the great Bob Gibson.

Cardinals manager Mike Shildt had this to say to Robert Murray of FanSided, concerning Wainwright following the game.

“That’s a lot of punchouts. It’s an impressive number. It speaks to a lot of things. Obviously, duration. You gotta have a strikeout pitch or pitches, and he’s got them. He’s got the signature curveball, but he’s got other weapons as well. It’s a tremendous accomplishment, and hats off to Adam for another tremendous milestone he’s reached in his career.”

Banner Year For Adam Wainwright

It was hard to foresee what type of a season that it would be for Wainwright. Many people believed that he had done well to be signed for another season. Few believed he would come out to put up his best numbers in five seasons. After all, Waino would be turning 40 before the season was over.

He surprised everyone, however. According to FanSided, “His dominance this season has put him in position to earn top-5 Cy Young Award votes. He is 16-7 and has a 3.05 ERA in 200.1 innings, a number that ranks second in the National League, with his career 3.35 ERA and long list of career achievements making it likely that he makes the Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible.”

The Cardinals have been lucky to have Adam Wainwright this season, as well as for his entire career. I, for one, can’t wait to see what he will bring for his final season.
