There’s no doubt that Steve Kerr will go down as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the game. The Warriors have won more than 500 games with him at the helm. The past two seasons have not gone how they wanted and the Warriors have been in a little slump this year, but the Warriors remain committed to Steve Kerr. As first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the two sides have agreed on a 2-year, $35 Million extension.
That’s a history-making deal for Steve Kerr as he’ll be the highest-paid coach in NBA history. He’s been at the helm for the Warriors for 10 seasons and has won four NBA Championships in that time. In 2015-16, he won the NBA’s Coach of the Year award.
The move to extend Kerr’s deal keeps him in the fold after the team has gone under some change in the front office. After last season Bob Myers left the team and Golden State named Mike Dunleavy Jr. the new General Manager. The two-year extension will align his contract with that of Stephen Curry‘s.
According to ESPN, the San Antonio Spurs’ Gregg Popovich technically makes more but he’s also the teams president. The new deal for Kerr tops the extension amount that the Miami Heat gave to Erik Spoelstra.
“I think it’s incredible,” Warriors forward Draymond Green said of Kerr’s extension. “Wouldn’t want to finish my time here with any other coach. What he’s meant to this franchise … the winning ways that he brought here, you can’t replace that. … He got what he deserved.”
Steve Kerr is also the coach for Team USA and will coach them 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
