Commanders fire Ron Rivera

After losing 38-10 to the Dallas Cowboys in their season finale, the Washington Commanders have fired head coach Ron Rivera, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Commanders’ decision to fire Ron Rivera, which was expected around the league, was announced Monday morning.

“Today, we made the decision to part ways with Ron Rivera,” Commanders’ owner Josh Harris said in a statement. “I want to thank Ron and his wife Stephanie for all they did for the Commanders and DMV community, especially during the ownership transition. Ron helped navigate this organization through some challenging times. He is a good man and thoughtful leader who has positively contributed to this organization and the NFL.”

Former General Managers To Assist In Coaching Search

To assist in the hiring search for a new head of football operations and head coach, the Commanders have hired former Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman and former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers.

“As we look ahead, we recognize the results this season were not good enough and a strategic shift in leadership and approach is necessary,” Harris continued in the statement. “Alongside my partners, I have assembled a small advisory committee to assist me in identifying two important roles for this organization: head of football operations and head coach. I have asked Mitch Rales, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and David Blitzer, as well as Bob Myers and Rick Spielman, to join the advisory committee that will work with me to make the best decisions for the franchise.”

Spielman was the general manager of the Vikings from 2012-21. Minnesota fired Spielman, alongside coach Mike Zimmer, following the 2021 NFL season.

Myers stepped down as the Warriors general manager and president after the 2022-23 season. He is a two-time executive of the year in the NBA and won four championships with Golden State.

The decision to fire Ron Rivera comes after the Washington Commanders finished with a 4-13 record in 2023.

Rivera began coaching the team in 2020. After making the playoffs in his first season as head coach, Rivera could not get Washington back to the postseason. The team never had a winning season under Rivera, finishing with eight or fewer wins each year. He finishes with a record of 26-40-1 across four seasons with the Commanders.
