Washington Football Team president Jason Wright issued a letter to fans regarding the team’s rebranding. The rebranding began last year when the team announced they would be retiring their old derogatory nickname.
A few days later, we found out the interim name, which is still in effect as the Washington Football Team. However, with a name that, when it was first announced, cued chuckles and giggles. In effect, it is a clean name and after a year, we have all accepted the name and don’t think anything of it.
Throughout the whole rebranding process, there has been a clear favorite which is the Warriors. However, fans who wanted that name got disappointed today. Jason Wright ruled the name Warriors off the table of possible names. Wright said the following in his excerpt about why Warriors is off the table,
“One might look at this name as a natural, and even harmless transition considering that it does not necessarily or specifically carry a negative connotation. But as we learned through our research and engagement with various groups, “context matters” and that makes it a “slippery slope.”

So, the rest of the article will have two strong potenial new names for the Washington Football Team and one option I do not want to see as the Football Team continues rebranding.
Option 1: Washington Generals
This first option is a nice homage to the cities namesake, President George Washington. For a city that is storied in history, this is a clean name that reflects that. This will also allow the franchise to keep the color gold in the franchise and add navy blue. The only downside is that Washington has a complicated past with slavery. However, there is a way to have the name Generals and still have a military connotation behind the name. This would allow the potential name to have significance for the city that has many military monuments.
Option 2 Washington Senators
This suggestion seems more or less fantasy for a DC sports fan. I do see an idea that would be a nice nod to the history of sports in Washington. In particular, since the team is considering a move from Landover and into the district. However, as the potential announcement of a potential new stadium is surprising, it does make sense to move into the city. So, if they are going to move into the actual city of Washington, why not rebrand the team after one of the most historic franchises.
The Only Bad Option Do Not Have D.C. in the Name
The only suggestion I do not want for the new name is D.C in the name. The main reason is D.C. will have more of a connotation between the DMV with the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. Maryland already has its own team with the Baltimore Ravens which are only 50 miles away from the District. So, with the Football Team representing the District and Virginia, Washington is a perfect name for the team.
So, fans of the Washington Football Team will have to wait until 2022 to find out the new name. However, until then fans can speculate and wish on what they want the new name to be for the team.
