San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) reacts after dunking during the second half against the Houston Rockets at Frost Bank Center.

Victor Wembanyama is only 20 years old and already creating history while finding his footing in the NBA.

Friday night against the Lakers, Wembanyama put up 27 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals, and 5 blocks in 31 minutes. The Spurs lost the game 123-118, but Wembanyama became the youngest player to achieve a 5×5 line since 1973-74 when the NBA started tracking steals and blocks.

LeBron James had high praise for the rookie sensation after the game saying, “He doesn’t have a ceiling, he can do whatever he wants in his career…you got guys in our league that you have to account for anytime you get around the rim, or around the perimeter in our league history, and he sits right at the top, if not around the top, with all the greats.”

The 7-foot-4 rookie fell one assist shy of a 5×5 game in Sacremento on Thursday. Wembanyama hit that mark one night later in Los Angeles. Not only did he do it, but he recorded a 5×5 in the smallest amount of playing time in league history.

This was the first 5×5 stat line since Jusuf Nurkic dropped 24 points, 23 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 blocks, and 5 steals for the Trail Blazers in 2019.

Anthony Davis logged one earlier that season (12/16/6/5/5), before which it had been nearly three years since Draymond Green’s 5×5. That came in double overtime against the Celtics.

Wembanyama and Michael Jordan are the only players in history to record five steals and five blocks in consecutive games.

Wembanyama joining the history books won’t mean as much until they come in victories.

“I wonder if he did it in wins, not losses. To me, it’s secondary. Hopefully… we can look back & think this is a good performance. As of today, I can’t be satisfied with a loss.”
