The WFT name change is dominating the headlines in a good way. The WFT announced yesterday on Facebook Feb.2, 2022 will be the day they reveal what the new name will be for the team. What follows is a personal take on what will be the new name so enjoy!
- Washington Red Wolves is not going to happen. According to Team President Jeremy Wright the name didn’t work for many reasons. In his President’s Brief released Tuesday he said, ” Once we began looking into Wolves, however, we became aware of a notable challenge: trademarks held by other teams would limit our ability to make the name our own. And without Wolves, variations like RedWolves wouldn’t have been viable either for these and other reasons.
- The WFT name change will not involve the color red. The color used to be part of the description of Native American skin. They will move as far away from any remnants of the old name. With that being said, it will not be the Red Hogs, Red Hawks, Red anything.
- Sorry, it’s not the Washington Defenders. This is because there is already a DC Defenders football team, part of the XFL. Now owned by Dwayne Johnson, reports surfaced this week the league will return in 2023. So yeah, that cannot be the case. To have two teams named the same thing would be well, corny.
My guess on the WFT name change: The Washington Admirals
My reason why it’s the Washington Admirals is because of the video teasers released on the WFT Facebook page. In the past 24 hours, they have released a redacted video teasing the new helmets and a photo of stars on the new jersey. In helmet video, while blurred, appears to have a yellow stripe going across the sides, seen here:
In the video revealing part of the new jersey, stars seem to go across the shoulders:
This would not match with the Commander’s name because usually, that’s a silver oakleaf.
Navy Admirals are recognized by the stars on their shoulder boards seen here. Also take notice of the shoulder board.
While it’s fun that everyone has their theories about what the Washington name change is, I’m just hoping it’s one that makes people sit up and take notice and not laugh. I think WFT fans are over the Football Team jokes.
