We all saw the performance of Haas this season or as many will say, the non-performance. Apart from the team mates switching positions on-track and Mick Schumacher’s battle with Max Verstappen in Hungary, there was not much to take home.

The American team got into the paddock in 2016 and scored a total of 29 points. Their best season was 2018. With 93 points, they ended that season with a fifth place in the constructors’ championship. And fast forward to 2021, they did not score a single point.

Haas team principal, Guenther Steiner made it clear early on that they will put the development for 2021 season on hold and will focus on the 2022 car instead.

The new technical regulations for 2022 meant that every team had to manage both the seasons in mind. And as the COVID pandemic hit, the financial problems for the Haas team increased. Therefore, they couldn’t make any significant upgrades, which saw them even out from the fight with the Williams.
All they did was to align the cars to the 2021 rules such as the floor change and a different front wing.

The biggest shift was in their driver line-up. Out were Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen. Replacing them were rookies, Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin.

Opinion

And personally, that’s the biggest investment Haas made and that too at the right time. If they would keep the old guns, it’d be nothing but a drag. As they both had good experience with good cars and driving the 2021 car would lead more door smashing. But with the newbies, this car gave them a chance to explore the sights of Formula 1 without the high pressure involved ( not considering the obvious pressure that comes with being an F1 driver).

So, we can expect Haas to be the underdog, not that they’ll reach the top places but atleast be in a good fight with midfielders again. As they sacrificed this season to focus on 2022 (or maybe we want Karma to act). But we still wait for the pre-season testings to see how the seeds are fared.
