This Montreal Canadiens team is fun to watch. Everyone thought they would be swept by Toronto in the first round. When that didn’t happen, we all thought Winnipeg would be the ones to knock them out. The Jets got swept. And of course, Vegas is one of the best teams in hockey. There was no way they were going to lose. They did.
People, if you weren’t paying attention to Montreal before, you better start now. For the first time since 1993, they are in the fight for the cup. That was also the last year they won, and no team from Canada has won it since. Vancouver came the closest in 2011, the Bruins took it in seven games.
The youth movement does it again
It was Artturi Lehkonen winning it 1:39 into overtime to propel Montreal into the next round. Pretty good timing for your first ever playoff goal. Cole Caufield also got a critical goal reminding everyone why he was called up. Caufield helped lead team USA to the gold medal in the world juniors tournament, and won the Hobey Baker award as the countries most outstanding player. While Nick Suzuki did not score, he has certainly made the Golden Knights regret trading him. Suzuki was traded in exchange for Max Pacioretty, the former captain of Montreal.
A good mix
Current captain Shea Weber, who also got a goal, is part of the veteran leadership. Other seasoned players like Eric Staal, Jeff Petry, Brendan Gallagher, Tyler Toffoli, and Corey Perry also bring experience and a championship petagry. Toffoli won two cups with the LA Kings. Perry may be a dirty player, but we can’t take away that he won with the Anaheim Ducks. Carey Price continues to do great things in net and showed why has has been in the league for so long.
The Canadiens are in a very good position to be successful moving forward, and have shown they should not be taken lightly in pursuit of the Stanley Cup.
