Some interesting news came out of Arizona and the Arizona Coyotes on August 19th. The city of Glendale announced that the 2021-2022 season will be the final year that the team plays there. NBC Sports learned that the team owes $1,462,792 in payment to Gila River Arena. As a result of this and probably some other factors we have yet to hear about, the city and arena will end the leasing agreement after the season. This now leaves the Arizona Coyotes without a home moving forward.
What’s Next?
Well, that’s a really good question. This is not normal. It’s one thing to make a planned move to a new and improved stadium in the area. But getting kicked out? That’s a new one. The Arizona Coyotes seem to want to make a bid to play in Tempe. Talks regarding that are on and off and we have nothing concrete at this time. It’s also worthy to note that the team has been late in the past to pay some players signing bonuses as well.
Are the Coyotes Going to Leave?
Probably not, as of right now. Personally, I don’t understand why the team doesn’t give the Phoenix Suns a call and ask to share the arena. After all, they were originally called the Phoenix Coyotes. A lot of arenas double as both basketball courts and hockey rinks. It would not be unheard of. Arizona State has a hockey team, but the chances of them sharing are probably slim to none. Either way, the Coyotes did themselves in by basically not paying rent, and it’s not a good look for the organization. The clock is running for them to find a new home in the state, or risk becoming nomads at their fans expense.
