Boston Celtics starting 5

Four games into the season, the Boston Celtics appear to be the championship favorites. They have been without star center Kristaps Porzingis, yet head coach Joe Mazzulla has found different ways to utilize the team’s depth at all positions. Opponents stand clueless on how to dethrone Boston’s game plan at all three levels on both ends of the court.

Although the Celtics are led by some of the best in the game, much of their success has stemmed from the contributions of defensive-minded guard Derrick White. He has created a legacy in the NBA through hustling from one side to another. Conversely, White has come alive as an offensive contributor since joining the Celtics.

In the 2024 playoffs, White thrived in a starting role next to multi-time all-stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. The veteran guard fed off their energy and made a winning impact on one of the greatest franchises in NBA history. Now, through three games this season, White is rising as an all-star candidate in the Eastern Conference.

Derrick White deserves to be selected as an all-star in the Eastern Conference this season.

Derrick White, drafted by San Antonio in 2017, entered the pros as a quick defensive facilitator. He understood the unique tactics to steal the ball defensively and pin shots off the backboard. This is a rare skill set White established at a young age, making him ready to perform against the NBA’s best competitors.

In year eight, on the Boston Celtics, White has bloomed into an untouchable piece under TD Garden. He has averaged 18.3 points, 4.8 assists, and 4.0 rebounds through four prominent wins. When glancing at efficiencies, the all-world defender is shooting 49.0% from the field and 39.4% from three. These numbers are all-star-worthy if he keeps this up.

The Celtics’ front office did a wonderful job in the summer of extending White before the season began. They evaluated their recent playoff success and viewed his offensive dominance as sustainable during the years ahead. If Boston hadn’t prioritized a future with their veteran guard, he could have taken more money in free agency from another contender.

That said, White’s offensive evolution has worked his way into the all-star campaign. He shows up each night, doesn’t make excuses, and focuses on winning games. This mentality, plus what White brings to the table, makes him due for the highest level of recognition around the league.
