The winless Lakers are now 0-4 on the season. It’s been a long time since the Lakers were this bad. This is the first time a LeBron-led team has started the season 0-4 since he joined the NBA in 2003! The Los Angeles Lakers have never started a season 0-4 under the direct ownership of Dr. Jerry Buss. Under the current generation of the Buss family, the Lakers are starting 0-4 for the third time in the past nine years. The Lakers are among the only winless teams in the NBA, along with the Magic (0-5), and the Kings (0-3).
Only two teams in NBA history have started 0-4 and made the playoffs. These teams are the 18/19 Thunder and the 20/21 Wizards. Interestingly, both of these teams included Russell Westbrook on the roster. For the Lakers to not make the playoff with three of their players being on the NBA’s 75 best players list.
Why are the winless Lakers struggling?
The short answer is that a lot of things have been wrong with the team so far this season. This has resulted in a lot of factors contributing to the team’s slow start. The construction of the roster to start the season was questionable. They are guard-heavy and lack depth at the five and on the wings. The biggest issue with the Lakers is their shooting.
The winless Lakers have shot 33-for-148 on threes so far this season. That 23% shooting from behind the arc is dead last in the league. Even worst, this is the worst percentage over a four-game span by any team in NBA history. The team’s shooting was a problem going into the season, but it’s much worse now. L.A. has lost several players to injury so far this season as well.
The law of averages would dictate that the team’s shooting will improve as they get healthier and more accustomed to each other. Although there is no guarantee that will happen. It will be interesting how the situation plays out going forward for the Lakers.
