The Washington Wizards concluded their month-long search Saturday when the team announced the hiring of Wes Unseld Jr. Unseld succeeds Scott Brooks as head coach after Brooks’s contract was not renewed by the team last month.
Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard talked about Unseld’s experience and why he is the right fit for the Wizards,
“His strong record as an in-game tactician along with his attention to detail on both sides of the ball, combined with his reputation for player development and outstanding character during his 20+ years of coaching left no doubt that he was the best choice to guide our team to the next level.”

One of the key roles that Unseld is going to have is developing the young talent in the organization. As beyond the all-star talents in Westbrook and Beal, this is a team with a lot of young raw talent. However, with Beal and Westbrook under contract through the end of this season. But, in 2022-2023, both players have a player option that will allow Unseld and his staff to develop the young talent to compete in the future.
So, Unseld will have one season where they will have a chance at getting into the playoffs before a rebuild begins. With free agency beginning in a couple of weeks, the Wizards will be an interesting team to watch their approach. The first approach is heavily investing in talent for a one-year sprint. However, the Wizards will also have the option to invest in younger talent in the market heavily. Though it will be a lengthy rebuild with younger players on the roster this year, they can begin building a solid foundation.
Unseld in his first carrer job inherits his hometown team as a child as a native of Catonsville, Maryland. His father played for the Wizards. In addition Unseld started his coaching carreer in Washington in 2005. However, with all the posistive sentiment at the end of the day he will be judge upon wins and losses. The Wizards have the talent for early success. But if Westbrook and Beal leave then the judgement will be based upon how successful of a rebuild that Unseld will lead in Washington.
