The New York Yankees have once again fallen victim to a Giancarlo Stanton injury.
The team placed outfielder and designated hitter Stanton on the 10-day injured list Sunday morning with a left hamstring strain, the team announced. Correspondingly, prospect Oswald Peraza has been called up ahead of the series finale against the Minnesota Twins.
Stanton’s injury was hinted at on Saturday, as he was substituted for a pinch runner after belting a two-run double that put the Yankees ahead 6-1.
It’s a brutal development for Stanton, who was off to a solid start to begin the 2023 season. In 13 games played, Stanton slashed .269/.296/.558 with four home runs and 11 RBI.
The Yankees could rotate players at DH in Stanton’s absence. Candidates likely to fill the role are Willie Calhoun, DJ LeMahieu and Josh Donaldson.
Stanton, 33 years old, has dealt with soft-tissue injuries in the past, which makes this injury all the more frustrating for fans. In 2022, he missed some time in May with a calf strain. In 2021, he missed time with a quad strain and in 2020 he was dealing with a hamstring injury.
For Peraza, the Yankees No. 3 prospect, according to MLB.com, it’s exciting. However, he may not see the field immediately.
Peraza has primarily played shortstop in the minors, and right now, top prospect Anthony Volpe is at that position. It’s hard to envision the Yankees benching Volpe in favor for the fresh face any time soon. But if Volpe struggles, it’s not out of the cards.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone could even consider shifting Gleyber Torres, starting second baseman, to DH if he desires immediate playing time for Peraza.
The Yankees have a plan for the highly-touted prospect, but right now, that plan appears unclear.
