In the late hours of Tuesday, March 15th, the New York Yankees announced that they are going to re-sign first baseman, Anthony Rizzo. This announcement was met with some hard feelings by Yankee fans. It is easy to see why they are frustrated.
However, the New York Yankees re-signing Anthony Rizzo arguably makes the most sense. With the new acquisition of shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa, catcher Ben Rortvedt, and most notably third basemen Josh Donaldson from the Minnesota Twins, this left the Yankees very limited with what they would be able to do with the remainder of free agency.
The Yankees had to give up Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela to acquire those three players from the Twins. Sanchez has played his entire MLB career with the Yankees but it was time to see him go. He, unfortunately, wasn’t producing as much as he used to, but we wish him luck over in Minnesota.
Getting rid of Gio Urshela was a bit of a headscratcher, but was something that had to be done in order to make the trade work. Urshela spend his last three seasons in New York with the Yankees and throughout that time, showed to be a valuable asset to the team.
With that trade taking place, the Yankees picked up Josh Donaldson’s contract and must pay him $50 million dollars. Although a lot of fans were hoping for Freddie Freeman, Anthony Rizzo re-signing made the most sense. It’s also not a bad thing either.
Anthony Rizzo’s 2021 With The Yankees
In 2021 after coming to New York from the Chicago Cubs, Rizzo finished out the season very well. In his 49 games played with the Yankees, Rizzo got 43 hits and seven triples. He also hit 8 homers and had 21 runs batted in.
In the postseason, Rizzo continued providing for the team, although very short-lived. The Yankees lost the wildcard game to the Boston Red Sox 6-2. In that game, Rizzo hit a bomb to put the Yankees on the scoreboard. Rizzo showed up when a lot of his teammates didn’t.
The Yankees re-signing Anthony Rizzo was arguably one of the better moves they could have made. Having a guy of Rizzo’s caliber on the team will hopefully continue to better the team as a whole. Rizzo isn’t the answer, but he’s a start.
