News surfaced on Saturday that Chicago Bulls star Zach LaVine requires surgery and will be out 4-6 months.
It’s a shocking and devastating blow to the Bulls. With only 2 months left in the NBA season, the news that LaVine requires surgery effectively ends his 2023/24 season. It was a frustrating year for the 10-year vet. After a 51-point performance against the Pistons back in October, there was a lot of optimism for him in and around the Bulls organization. But injuries and inconsistent play hindered LaVine throughout the season. He finishes the year averaging only 19.5 points per game in only 25 games played- both his lowest marks since the 2017/18 campaign.
What This Means for the Bulls
The Bulls received the news a few hours ahead of their matchup with the Sacramento Kings, which they lost 123-115. They are now 23-27 and sit in 9th in the Eastern conference. While they are competing for the play-in, they will undoubtedly continue to start the young backcourt of Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu.
White, a 5th-year player out of North Carolina, has been enjoying a breakout season averaging 19 points and 5 assists per game. He’s also shooting an efficient 46% from the field and 39% from three. Furthermore, having started all 50 of their games, White has turned into Chicago’s most reliable guard this season.
Dosunmu on the other hand has only been starting in place of LaVine for the last 7 games. But he’s been a nice surprise as he’s averaged 17 points on 57% shooting in that span. Dosunmu, a star at Illinois during his college days, was a late 2nd round pick by the Bulls in 2021.
