The 2023 NFL Free Agents leave a bit to be desired on the offensive side of the ball. However, the class’s strengths lie in the defense. In this article, I’m going to go over some of my favorite landing spots for the top defensive free agents.
James Bradberry: Miami Dolphins
After cutting Byron Jones and doing some restructuring elsewhere, the Dolphins have plenty of money to spend. A somewhat underwhelming season on defense will mean Miami will be looking to upgrade on that side of the ball. The hiring of new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio means the Dolphins are going to need to cover better than ever due to the lower blitzing percentage we are sure to see in 2024. Coming off an all-pro campaign, Bradberry has put together a string of very solid seasons and positioned himself as the best corner in this year’s class. Bradberry is the perfect fit as a lockdown corner next to Xavien Howard who plays much more aggressively with the ball in the air. This pair becomes very scary and will help Miami take the next step as an AFC contender.

Bobby Wagner: Dallas Cowboys
Another all-pro from this past season, Wagner was a surprise cut earlier in the offseason and instantly became the hottest target on the market. When it comes to the 2023 NFL Free Agents, you aren’t going to find a better option than Wagner. For the Cowboys, they may be losing Leighton Vander Esch and they already don’t have the best off-the-ball unit in the world. Reports say that Dallas has already made some calls about Wagner and I wouldn’t be surprised if they get a deal done soon. The fit makes too much sense and the Cowboys are ready to take the next step as contenders in the NFC. Wagner will help them do that.

Jessie Bates III: New York Jets
The Bengals and Bates have been working to get a deal done for some time now, but it is becoming more and more likely that they will be going their separate ways. Even though the Jets just recently traded for Chuck Clark, there is no reason they can’t continue making improvements at safety. Bates has been one of the best deep safeties in the league over the past five years for Cincinnati. He has amassed 14 interceptions over that span. Pairing him with Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed in New York would immediately make the Jets arguably the best defensive backfield in the league.

Javon Hargrave: Seattle Seahawks
It’s no secret that Seattle could use some major upgrades along their defensive line. Hargrave is the best upgrade you can make out of all the 2023 NFL free agents. After having 11 sacks this past season for the Eagles, Hargrave is in line for a big contract. Additionally, the Seahawks also have $20 million in cap space and plenty of ways to clear up even more. Hargrave would fit perfectly as the Poona Ford replacement on Seattle’s 3-4 defensive front and help them get back to the playoffs in 2024.

Yannick Ngakoue: Chicago Bears
In addition to being one of the most consistent pass rushers in the league, Ngakoue isn’t even 28 years old yet. He has amassed 65 sacks during his seven-year career and that’s exactly what Chicago needs. Pressure. After trading back to No.9, the Bears are out of the sweepstakes for a top pass rusher in the draft. So, they look to the 2023 NFL free agents and get the most productive guy of the bunch. Although he will be expensive, the Bears have plenty of money to spend on a guy of Ngakoue’s caliber.

I think Bradberry would be a perfect fit for the Dolphins.
