2023 NFL Free Agents: Where Do They Land?

Free Agents

Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post

With NFL free agency set to begin in just a couple of weeks, it’s time to start thinking about where some of the most intriguing free agents may play in 2023. This specific article is only going to be discussing players on offense outside of the quarterback position, while also taking into account team fit, scheme, and salaries.

Jakobi Meyers: Detroit Lions

Meyers in this year’s top free agents at the wide receiver position. Because of this, he will have his pick of the liter in terms of where he wants to play. As for Detroit, they are still in the market for another true WR-1 to pair with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. Meyers’ skill set as a route technician and separator would pair perfectly with what the Lions already have. Detroit has over $20 million in cap space and could easily free up even more if they wanted. The Lions want to carry over their top-tier offense into the 2023-2024 season and Meyers is going to help them do it.

Saquon Barkley: Baltimore Ravens

Although I think there is a good chance the Giants could retain Barkley, there are also many possible suitors elsewhere. The Ravens have had one of the most prominent running attacks in the league over the past couple of seasons and don’t seem interested in changing that. Although they hired Todd Monken as the new OC, Monken has had a plethora of incredible backs during his time at Georgia and has used them well. Baltimore has been reluctant to surround Lamar Jackson with receiving talent, but pairing him with Barkley would surely help to keep Jackson. Barkley finds himself on a new team, ready to win, that will also use him extensively. Baltimore uses their 20-plus million dollars in the cap to hopefully continue having a dominant ground game.

Mike McGlinchey: Chicago Bears

There is no denying the glaring hole along the offensive line that the Bears have. Braxton Jones and Teven Jenkins were solid pieces this past year, but every other position could use an upgrade. In comes McGlinchey. McGlinchey is one of this year’s top free agents at tackle and will be in line for a big payday. Chicago can give him all he wants and then some since they have almost $100 million in cap space. He would slide in at the right tackle position and would use his talents as one of the top run-blocking tackles in the league to hopefully help the Bears repeat their dominance on the ground.

Dalton Schultz: Carolina Panthers

The Panthers are actually in a relatively good spot as a roster outside of quarterback. Assuming they upgrade QB with a free agent or in the draft, they’re going to want to make their offense as electric as possible. Their current tight end room is okay with Tommy Tremble and Ian Thomas, both guys I can see being solid No.2s. Schultz is a top-tier tight end that would definitely offer an upgrade at the position. He amassed almost 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns over the past three seasons and will hopefully bring that production to Carolina.

Michael Thomas: Kansas City Chiefs

This fit is obviously assuming Thomas gets cut by the Saints, which seems more and more likely as the days go on this offseason. If does get released, he instantly becomes one of the best free agents in the class. Not only is he extremely talented, but there is a chance a team could get him on a cheaper deal after coming off of multiple injuries. With JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman both set to become free agents, the Chiefs could be in need of a No.1 wideout. Thomas separates with the best of them and consistently wins his jump ball opportunities, making him a perfect fit in Kansas City’s high-powered passing attack.

I will have a defensive version of the NFL free agents and their landing spots very soon. Excited to see where all these guys land.
