After a historically prevalent rookie campaign from Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs are set to thrive for decades ahead. The front office approached the offseason with the correct mindset in acquiring a combination of veterans and young talent to compete in the Western Conference.
Moreover, despite bringing in numerous contributors, many fans still count the Spurs out of the playoffs. This is a mistake, as any team led by the forces of Wembanyama and head coach Gregg Popovich has a chance to fight for it all. It will all come down to the consistency and leadership of their front office and role players.
Key Additions:
PG Chris Paul
Through the summer, the Spurs understood that pairing a true point guard with Wembanyama’s three-level scoring would feed generations. Although there were several suitors available, Paul was the most viable, given his experience and pass-first mindset.
The Spurs were focused on finalizing their core from the ground up, and drafting Castle was a decision to cap a successful rebuild. He is an explosive guard who excels on both ends of the court, evolving San Antonio into showtime territory. Castle also brings championship experience rooted in the 2024 March Madness Tournament.
Key Losses:
On the nights Graham suited up for San Antonio, he made an impact towards winning games. Any time he was checked in, the former Kansas Jayhawk looked to score or facilitate the basketball, leading to simple points. Losing a player like this is significant, especially when the team faces adversity.
Though Osman only spent one season with the Spurs, he will be remembered as a true winner in all aspects of the game. He was exceptional from three-point range, shooting 38.9% in 72 games. Behind the scenes, Osman provided pivotal development to San Antonio’s young stars looking for a second contract at the highest level.
Starting Lineup: PG Paul, SG Devin Vassell (injured), SF Harrison Barnes, PF Jeremy Sochan, C Victor Wembanyama
Bench: Tre Jones, Castle, Keldon Johnson, Julian Champagnie, Zach Collins, Malaki Branham, Sandro Mamukelashvili
Reserves: Blake Wesley, Charles Bassey, Malachi Flynn, David Duke Jr. (TW)
In late June, Vassell endured surgery on his right foot. This keeps him out of the lineup until further notice. However, San Antonio plans to re-evaluate the injury shortly after the season begins.
Season Outlook:
With prominent upgrades from top to bottom, the Spurs will be looking to keep their postseason hopes alive in the play-in tournament. This would be a major step forward, as San Antonio has been in a playoff drought since 2019.
Projected Finish:
Record: 40-42
Projected Finish: 10th in the Western Conference
