It didn’t take long for CP3 to find a new team after he was released by the Warriors. Just a couple of hours after, it was reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN that Chris Paul was signing with the Spurs. Woj reports that it is a one-year, $11 million deal.
The deal makes sense for the Spurs. Paul is an established leader around the NBA. He’s entering his 20th season and will now be teaming up with superstar big man Victor Wembanyama. A season ago the Spurs didn’t really have a point guard. They were throwing a young converted forward in Jeremy Sochan out there. Sochan is talented, but PG is probably not his most natural position.
This comes as no surprise. According to NBA Insider Marc Stein, the Spurs were one of two teams interested in Paul.
His best days are behind him. That’s something that Gregg Popovich will have to know. Last year, Paul averaged 9.2 points, 6.8 assists and 1.2 steals in 26.4 minutes per game (58 contests) for the Warriors. Still, the idea of bringing Chris Paul in to help accelerate Wembanyama’s development makes a lot of sense.
As of right now, it is unclear whether Pop will have Paul come off the bench or if he’ll slot him into the starting rotation. The Spurs also added Stephon Castle with the No. 4 overall pick. Another player whose development Chris Paul could help the Spurs accelerate. He could still be a valuable piece, especially to a young team like the Spurs. He has a lot of experience and an established leader in the NBA today.
Paul is a 12-time NBA All-Star and four-time All-NBA first-teamer. At 39 years old, he’s still a productive performer when called upon.
