The 2024 NFL defensive free agents are stacked. There are multiple players that deserve and will probably get deals of over $100 million. This class is going to very intriguing and will undoubtedly shake up the league for many years to come. Let’s take a look at some of the guys that could be on the move.
Justin Madubuike: Houston Texans
The sad reality is that the Baltimore Ravens aren’t going to be able to pay everyone. With that in mind, at least one of Madubuike and Patrick Queen will probably be on the move. Madubuike had a massive breakout season in 2023, tallying a career high 13 sacks. A spot I like for him is with the Houston Texans. The Texans have money to spend and a huge need along the interior of their defensive line. After a surprise season with a defensive minded head coach, I think Houston will look to add some difference makers on the defensive side of the ball. The Texans’ front – seven would instantly become one of the better units in the league if they sign Madubuike.
Patrick Queen: Indianapolis Colts
Here we have another one of the best defensive free agents who once again, comes from the Baltimore Ravens. Queen has improved his game every year of his career so far, posting a career high 73.1 PFF grade in 2023. However, the Ravens have Roquan Smith under contract already. So, I’m not sure they will want to shell out more big time money to an inside backer. A perfect fit for Queen to me, would be the Colts. Indianapolis has let go off Shaq Leonard and Bobby Okereke in the past year and are now left with a pretty big whole at MLB. Queen possesses the sideline to sideline athleticism that the Colts covet and would be a great cornerstone for an already talented squad in Indy.
Brian Burns: Arizona Cardinals
Burns and the Panthers have had some well documented turmoil the past two seasons. For that reason, I believe Burns will play elsewhere in 2024. A perfect fit would be with the Arizona Cardinals. Despite having one of the brighter minded defensive HCs in the league, the Cardinals were bottom three in the league when it came to sacks. As a result, they’re going to look to spend big on upgrades in free agency. Burns has 46 sacks in five seasons in Carolina and has shown a great deal of pass rushing prowess when he’s locked in. I think coach Jonathan Gannon will be able to get the best out of Burns in Arizona.
Danielle Hunter: Chicago Bears
Similarly to Burns, Hunter has had some contract disputes the past few years. However, Hunter also posted a career best 16.5 sacks in 2023. With this in mind, I don’t think the Vikings will be able to address QB, pay Justin Jefferson, and afford Hunter’s new deal. A team who can afford Hunter is the Chicago Bears. The Bears were at the very bottom of the league in sacks and team pass rushing grade in 2023. After acquiring Montez Sweat at the trade deadline, the Bears still need to get him a running mate. Hunter and Sweat would form the league’s most formidable pass rushing duo and hopefully help Chicago get back to being the “Monsters of the Midway”.
Kendall Fuller: Tennessee Titans
Surprisingly, Fuller has seemingly flown under many peoples’ radars. He was one of the lone bright spots on an otherwise atrocious Washington defense in 2023. I believe Fuller will look to play elsewhere next seasons and the Titans would be an awesome landing spot. Fuller has played very well as an outside corner and as a nickel guy throughout his eight seasons in the league. The Titans are losing both Sean Murphy-Bunting & Kristian Fulton to free agency. They are going to need a reliable CB1 as a replacement. The Titans have plenty of cap space to sign Fuller and a fresh coaching staff for him to work with, making this a great pairing.
