How deep are the trenches?
To finish off the week at the NFL Combine, the trenches were tested with the Offensive Line drills. We got the chance to see how deep the Offensive Line positions were. Here are five players who stood out:
Jackson Powers-Johnson, Oregon
At this point, the former Duck is becoming one of the most polarizing linemen in the draft. Early on he was expected to go in the later rounds. Through, both the Reese’s Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine he has improved his draft stock. No numbers were reported for JPJ in the 40-yard dash or 10-yard split, but he completed 30 Reps in the Bench Press as well as a 32″ vert and 8-foot-8-inch broad jump. I would not doubt it if the 2023 Rimington Trophy Award winner is selected in the first round.
Troy Fautanu, Washington
Early on there was some belief that Fautanu may be forced to slide inside, but as it turns out he only lacks the height at Tackle. His longs arms (34-inch) could make up for that. He made a strong case that he could do a solid job as an NFL Offensive Tackle.
Beau Limmer, Arkansas
Outside of guys like JPJ, Graham Barton and a few others the iOL has not been highly regarded. Several of the guys expected to go in the later rounds showed out at the 2024 NFL Combine. Limmer was one of the guys. He finished amongst the best across the board. In all of the drills, he showed speed, agility and smoothness as he looked to prove he could be a starting center at the next level.
Tanor Bortolini, Wisconsin
Another offensive lineman who wasn’t high on many draft boards, but at the combine he may have raised some eyebrows. He not only looked fantastic in the 40-yard dash, but also in the field drills. He outpaced the entire offensive line group at the NFL Combine in the agility drills and ranked second in the 40-yard dash. That should tell you how successful he could be at the next level.
Mason McCormick, South Dakota State
Across the board, the former Jackrabbit blocker put up incredible numbers. He tied for the highest broad jump at 9-9 and had the third-highest vertical at 35.5 inches. He showed some promise in the agility drills. McCormick proved he could be an upper-level athlete for a spot at the NFL.
