Nick Saban Coaching Career

Toledo Rockets (1990): Nick Saban began his head coaching career at the University of Toledo in 1990, leading the Rockets to a 9-2 record.

Cleveland Browns (1991-1994): Saban transitioned to the NFL as the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, working alongside Bill Belichick from 1991 to 1994.

Michigan State Spartans (1995-1999): Saban returned to the college ranks as the head coach of the Michigan State Spartans. He compiled a 34-24-1 record during his tenure.

LSU Tigers (2000-2004): Saban then moved to LSU, where he experienced his most success to date. He guided the Tigers to a BCS National Championship in the 2003 season and finished his tenure with a 48-16 record.

Miami Dolphins (2005-2006): Saban had a brief stint in the NFL again, serving as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins for the 2005 and 2006 seasons. He led Miami to a 9-7 record in his first season, followed by a disappointing 6-10 record in 2006. After denying several rumors about taking the Alabama job, he would leave Miami for the Crimson Tide in 2007.

Alabama Crimson Tide (2007-present): Saban will always be remembered by most as Alabama’s head coach. Under his leadership, the Crimson Tide returned as a college football powerhouse, winning six national championships and changing the landscape of college football forever. Alabama won at least 10 games in 16 straight seasons under Saban, the longest streak by any program in the AP Poll era. He would also tie former Alabama head coach Bear Bryant with six national title wins at Alabama.

Who Will Be Nick Saban’s Successor?

Dan Lanning

According to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning is seen as Alabama’s top target to replace Nick Saban. Dan Lanning was formerly a graduate assistant at Alabama in 2015.

Dabo Swinney

Dabo Swinney was long rumored as a potential successor to Nick Saban when he finally decided to retire. Swinney has strong ties to the school going back to his collegiate career, where he played receiver for the Tide from 1990-1992. He would then serve as a staff member in various positions for Alabama from 1993-2000.
