The Boise State Broncos are about to be a really good team. After firing Andy Avalos, the Broncos went on a four-game winning streak, including the Mountain West Championship. That was the highlight of a season that otherwise would have been average. With Andy Avalos, they were 5-5 and they lost by 13 points in their bowl game to UCLA. Maybe perhaps, their biggest news came after the season. Former 5-star recruit Malachi Nelson has announced that he will be playing in Boise, Idaho next season.
Nelson had entered the transfer portal before the Trojans played in their bowl game. In 2023, he played in just one game for USC, completing 1 of 3 pass attempts in the then-No. 6 Trojans’ 56-28 win over San Jose State on Aug. 26.
Boise State has long been regarded as one of the top group of five programs. This further proves that. It will be an uphill battle for them to get back to AP Poll status but with Malachi Nelson and Spencer Danielson leading the way, maybe it’s what the program needs. If all goes well, Danielson’s offense could feature two dynamic options between Nelson and Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year Ashton Jeanty.
Under the new CFP 12-team format, the Broncos could have a chance to compete against a top-tier FBS program. During the regular season, Boise State is set to face Oregon and Oregon State. Heading into next season, the Broncos already had some momentum but adding a quarterback like Nelson, who is one of the top quarterbacks and overall players in the transfer portal, adds to that.
Prior to the bowl game, Taylen Green had announced that he would be entering the portal. Nelson should give them a quality replacement. However, the question surrounding him will be how he develops with BSU.
