A legendary name in auto racing will not be making the jump to Formula One. The racing series rejected Andretti Global’s application to join the premier racing series. Michael Andretti applied to expand the Formula One grid by two cars in either the 2025 or 2026 season. However, Formula One left the door open for potential expansion with Andretti Global.

Formula One’s governing body, FIA, actually approved Andretti’s bid in July, but the racing series wanted to conduct its own review before allowing the expansion. FIA gave F1 six months to complete its review and make a decision. On Wednesday, F1 rejected the application, and released a full statement citing General Motors’ lack of an engine ready for competition. The racing series told Andretti Global the application could be revisited in 2028 when GM’s competition engine is projected to be ready.

Andretti Global

Andretti Global began as Andretti Autosports before a rebranding. The American motorsports organization field teams in Indycar, Indy NXT, Formula E, Extreme E, IMSA and Australian Supercars. Andretti entries won the Indianapolis 500 six times, the Indycar Championship four times, as well as the now-defunct Championship Auto Racing Teams Championship.

Michael Andretti leads Andretti Global as principal owner. As a driver, Andretti won three USAC races and 42 CART races where he clinched the 1991 CART PPG Indy Car World Series. He raced in Formula One in 1993 where he recorded one podium finish.
