Major changes coming to the Formula One racing landscape as Lewis Hamilton will leave Mercedes at the end of the season to join Ferrari. Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes lasts through the 2025 season. However, Mercedes announced Thursday the former champion will be leaving at the end of the 2024 season.

Ferrari released a statement on Twitter Thursday announcing the move and welcoming Hamilton to the team. He signed a multi-year deal to team with Charles Leclerc as drivers for Ferrari. Speaking on the move, Leclerc said, “anyone on the grid would love to have Lewis as a teammate.”

Mercedes also released a statement saying Hamilton had activated his release cause. The Formula One legend joined Mercedes in 2013 when he jumped from McLaren. Hamilton won 81 races and six of his seven championships with the Silver Arrows. However, he has struggled in recent years with his last win coming in the penultimate race of the 2021 season.

Lewis Hamilton leads all F1 drivers in wins, poles and podium finishes. He’s tied with Michael Schumacher for most F1 championships with seven. Meanwhile, Ferrari has not won a drivers’ title since Kimi Raikkonen in 2007.
