We can now add edible mascots to the list of firsts that we have seen in the sports industry. On Thursday, the Pop-Tarts Bowl took over the internet as the mascot was introduced. Before the game kicked off, ESPN play-by-play announcer Anish Shroff poked fun at the mascot. Unlike regular pop-tarts that you buy at the store, the mascot has a short shelf life.
“Here’s the sad part of the story,” Shroff said. “After the game, he will be devoured, he will die, and he will be his own last meal.”
While he isn’t wrong, its weird to think about a mascot being eaten. Maybe that’s because it’s the first time we’ve heard of it. Okay, so there is a twist. The actual mascot is not eaten, but the flavor of the biggest pop-tart ever isn’t known until after the game. The human mascot disappeared somewhere inside the toaster. (At least we hope.)
Some are already saying that the Pop-Tarts Bowl should be a New Year’s Six or even a CFP game moving. With the expansion happening next year. The College Football Playoff Committee will need to select more bowls to be in the mix. Maybe the quirkiness of the Pop Tarts Bowl mascot will be enough. It adds a layer of excitement to the game.
After the game, the mascot is on top of a giant toaster and drops down inside. In the first-ever Pop-Tarts Bowl, Kansas State defeated North Carolina State 28-19. The trophy which was awarded to Kansas State also had some Pop-Tarts in the “toaster slots.”
In the past, we’ve seen Cheez-Its dumped on coaches, this year we saw mayo dumped on coaches and many other funny things. The edible mascot certainly takes things up a notch within the College Football Bowl games. It’s something that hasn’t been seen before.
