Broncos bench Russell Wilson

Many casual NFL and baseball fans may not know that while Russell Wilson is being benched by the Denver Broncos, he’s still under contract with the New York Yankees. The two-year tenure outside of Seattle hasn’t been a success for Wilson. While it’s likely that he could be Wilson could be picked up by another team in football, the MLB may still be an option.

There’s been a few NFL quarterbacks throughout history who were also selected in the MLB Draft. Household names like Tom Brady, Kyler Murray and Patrick Mahomes top the list. In 2010, two years before he was selected in the NFL Draft, the Colorado Rockies had selected Russell Wilson in the fourth round. He went on to play for two years in the minors before electing to play his final year of eligibility in football at Wisconsin.

The Texas Rangers had selected Wilson in the Rule 5 MLB Draft. They had kept his rights until 2018 before trading them to the New York Yankees for cash considerations. At the time, the Yankees didn’t acquire Russell Wilson in hopes that he would resume his baseball career. They wanted him so that he could share his knowledge and competitiveness with the Yankees roster.

After the deal was made, Wilson made a celebratory tweet. In the weeks that followed, he had made some appearances in the Yankees Spring Training games in Tampa.

Wilson had never been an impressive baseball player or at least not as impressive as he was with the football in his hand. In the previous seasons that he played, he featured a poor batting average and little power. Though his on-base ability was always respected.

As Wilson finishes up his 12th season in the NFL, it may be unlikely that we see him make a full-sport change. However, the Yankees do still own his rights in baseball. Maybe they can convince him to work out and maybe play a year or two. They are gearing up for a World Series run with the addition of Juan Soto. Of course, even that would take something shocking for it to happen.

While some Seahawks fans are calling for him to return to Seattle, that is also unlikely. The Hawks will more than likely look to draft a QB in the upcoming draft. As of now, the Commanders, Patriots, Vikings and Raiders.
