Since winning Super Bowl 46, the New York Giants have eight losing seasons in 10 years after losing to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14. This season makes five straight losing records.
The Giants (4-9) traveled to the beautiful SoFi stadium losing 21- 37 to a Chargers (8-5) team contending for the AFC West. Justin Herbert‘s offense scored effortlessly against a mid-tier Giants defense that could not make any stops.
Putting up points when it matters is as difficult as climbing Mount Everest for the Giants. It’s been the same old song and dance for this team the entire season. In the past four weeks, they have only scored four touchdowns.
The Giants’ defense could not get off the field for most of the game. The Chargers were efficient every time they had the ball. They had 18 first downs while New York only had six in the first half. They were also on the field for over 10 minutes more. The Giants’ defense looked sluggish as a result.
The Chargers led the game 37-7 with 9:28 left in the fourth quarter.
Mike Glennon‘s second start for the Giants was slightly better than his first but still could not give the offense any momentum. He threw for 191 yards, two passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and an interception. Two of the touchdowns came when the game was out of reach.
Second-year quarterback Justin Herbert continues to show that he can be a star in the NFL. Herbert threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns along with a QB rating of 133.
This offense was also without star receiver Keenan Allen. Herbert’s other favorite target Mike William became eligible to play after passing his COVID-19 tests.
The impressive outing by Herbert also hurts Giants fans that are still wishing that they can find their definitive franchise quarterback. Too many losing seasons can do that.
In Week 15, the Chargers face the Kansas City Chiefs in a divisional matchup that could determine who leads the AFC West on Thursday Night Football. The Giants face an explosive Dallas Cowboys team on Sunday.
