Baker Mayfield openly admits he was not himself on Christmas Day. After ripping the NFL on Twitter, he made his return from the COVID/Reserve list against the Green Bay Packers.
His return is something that Browns fans will hope to soon forget. To clarify, he threw four interceptions against the Packers in a 24-22 loss.
And, in a cleveland.com piece, he’s putting a good chunk of the blame on himself.
“I don’t think it was anything preparation-wise, mentally, it was just missed throws,” Mayfield said. “Uncharacteristic, and I hurt this team.”
Before Saturday’s contest, the fourth-year product out of Oklahoma threw 15 picks in a span of 28 games.
On the other hand, Mayfield gave praise to his defense for keeping the team in the game.
“I thought the defense played great,” he noted. “I thought our skill guys played well. Offensive line same thing. Backs, obviously running their tails off, that’s why it’s frustrating for me.”
Consequently, after testing positive for the virus on December 15, Mayfield had to sit on the bench. The rust of not participating in practice, in addition to virtual meetings, showed at Lambeau on Christmas.
“I’ve had a ton of reps in making those throws and I expect myself to make them and that’s why it’s frustrating,” he said. “I’d be sitting giving an excuse that I haven’t practiced. But I’m an NFL quarterback and I need to make those throws. I have before time and time again, so it is what it is.”
Simply put, in conclusion, Baker is striving to be a team-first guy. “There’s no excuse.”
