The last US beach volleyball team standing of Alix Klineman and April Ross, aka Alix and April beat the German team of Margareta Kozuch and Laura Ludwig in two sets. The #2 ranked beach volleyball team in the world will advance to the semifinals. Ludwig won the gold in Rio.
Set One
The US got out to a 5-2 lead, but the Germans came back quickly on a 4-1 run to tie it at 6. The Germans lead grew to 11-8 and the US took a timeout. Germany came out faster than Alix and April anticipated. They answered with a 3-0 run of their own as the back and forth nature continued. The sand was hard packed sand due to the rain, and that made it hard to move. The first set was tied 13 times before the the US took the set 21-19.
Set Two
The second set continued with the back and forth nature. Germany began to gain momentum. The tension mounted with the score tied at 16. The US got close to victory with a 19-17 lead. A service error by Germany gave the US match point. Germany beat the first but not the second. The US win a hard fought bout 21-19 to advance to the semis.
