Ben Johnson

One of the hottest head coaching candidates has removed his name from the market once again. Ben Johnson has announced that he will stay with Detroit, according to Tom Pelissero.

This will be the second year in a row that the Lions Offensive Coordinator has removed his name in the hopes to bring a Lombardi trophy to Detroit. It’s clear that many teams wanted him. In fact, he was interviewed by all of the teams with a coaching vacancy. The last two teams to be rumored were the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders. With the latter seeing more reports that Johnson would be their next head coach.

Even in one year, Johnson who is currently 37, will be one of the youngest coaches at the highest level. Since Ben Johnson has taken over the offense in Detroit, it has taken off. Johnson runs a balanced pass-run offense and utilizes the strength of his offensive line. Since 2022, the Lions ranked fourth in points per game (26.9), first in total yards per contest (387.4) and fifth in yards per play (5.9)

In 2023 the Lions had four players with 500+ scrimmage yards (T-most in NFL) – Amon-Ra St. Brown (1,539), Jahmyr Gibbs (1,261), David Montgomery (1,132), and Sam LaPorta (893). Jared Goff has looked comfortable in Johnson’s offense, and he led the Lions to their first playoff win for the first time in 30+ years.

If that continues in 2024 positive trajectory continues, there’s no doubt that Johnson will once again be sought after in the 2025 coaching cycle. As of now, this is good news for Motown. They’ll continue to have an experienced play-caller in 2024. The Lions will be looking to build off their 2023 campaign with a Super Bowl appearance. They came close but a second-half collapse against the San Francisco 49ers.
