Jordan Poyer

As teams gear up for the new league year, many players are seeing themselves be released by their respective teams. On Wednesday, All-Pro Safety Jordan Poyer was one of those players. The 10-year veteran out of Dallas, Oregon has made a name for himself with the Buffalo Bills. Ian Rapoport was the first to report the news.

Poyer went to high school in Astoria, then later went on to Oregon State. That was all over 10 years ago, however, as the now 32-year-old is being cut by the Bills to save some money. In the upcoming season, Poyer was due for a salary cap figure of $7.72 Million. Whereas, releasing Jordan Poyer would save the Bills $5.72 Million on the cap with only $2 Million in dead money.

For the past seven seasons, Poyer has been with Buffalo where he has become a Pro-Bowler and an All-Pro safety. Not only has he done well individually, but he’s also become a leader for the Bills’ Defense. In 2023, he proved that he can be a reliable ballhawk on the backend of a defense. He gobbled up 100 tackles, two quarterback hits and four pass deflections. In fact, he’s totaled over 100 tackles in four of the last seven seasons. Getting rid of a player like this may be a tough pill to swallow, but the Bills are in need of getting younger and to release some money off the books.

Poyer is not the only player being released by the Bills. They have also cut C Mitch Morse, DB’s Siran Neal and Tre’Davious White, WR Deonte Hardy and RB Nyheim Hines. Entering the day, they were roughly $32.5 million over the cap, according to Over The Cap. By cutting all of the players listed they have created approximately $25.96M in salary cap space. All clubs must be in compliance before the new league year opens on March 13.
